Metallography is the theory of the microstructure of metals, and is thus a discipline of metallurgy. The task of metallography is the qualitative and quantitative description of the structure of metallic materials by means of microscopic methods. In order to recognise the microstructure of a metallic material, it must be prepared. Knowledge of the properties and the processing of a metal is important in order to avoid errors in the preparation and structure assessment.


A so-called mobile metallography is nowadays used so that microstructural examination on large dies/tools/machinery can be performed. In doing so, the surface of the tool is prepared in a point-by-point manner and the microstructure is subsequently evaluated using a portable measuring microscope.
